What the?!....Ullage Floats
"Ullage" comes from the Latin and French terms, which boil down to the original meaning of "the amount of liquid needed to fill a barrel up to the bung hole". By extension, it is now applied to the unfilled air space at the top of a bottle of wine, barrel or even tanker truck!
Having an air gap can cause two major issues when transporting wine in a truck:
- Free surface effect; this refers to the tendency of liquids or other unbound small solids to move in response to operator induced motions. Hydrodynamic forces resulting from oscillations reduce the stability and controllability of a tanker vehicle. The momentum of large volumes of moving liquids cause significant dynamic forces, which act against the righting effect. causing each roll to become more and more extreme, eventually overcoming the righting effect leading to a capsize.
- Oxidation; sloshing around inside a tanker causes air molecules to become mixed into the wine when the exposed air becomes dissolved a physical reaction takes causing the wine to become oxidised. Oxidation can cause a loss of aroma, browning, and development of an odd nutty like flavour.
Indac’s Ullage float fills the air gap and stabilises the liquid; they push the fluid levels up creating less slack in the tank which stabilises the tanker. Such a simple solution to a complex problem.....
Our Ullage floats are: Volume = 170 litre Weight = 12 kg Unit dimensions = 1775 mm (length) X 388mm (diametre).
